Strategy Overview: Guiding Fundraising Efforts
Dr. Rasmus’s journey began with an unexpected encounter. In 1997, he met Jack Blanton, the chair of a large endowment in Houston. Their friendship sparked a pivotal conversation about mission and purpose. Jack asked the critical question: “How can I help you?” Caught off guard, Rudy realized the importance of preparation. He responded, “Mr. Blanton, it would take about $1 million to build this project.” Jack’s advice? Assume someone wants to help and be prepared to ask. Armed with a plan, Rudy successfully built and paid for the project. The lesson? “People give to those they know, trust, and who have a clear impact plan,” says Dr. Rasmus. Relationships matter, and subtly sharing the mission attracts support.

Community Engagement: Telling Powerful Stories
Rudy discovered the power of storytelling. He mined the mission for impactful stories, emphasizing the work’s byproducts. Delivering the mission and tangible service made a difference. St. John’s Church, located in downtown Houston, opened its doors to the “untouchables,” feeding the unhoused. The local newspaper was fascinated by their openness and commitment to community service.

Challenges Overcome: Prioritizing Compliance
Once the funds are secured, accountability becomes paramount. Rudy emphasizes the need to show proper accounting. Following the plan and providing data to demonstrate fulfillment is crucial. He reminds fundraisers: “This is not your money!” Integrity and transparency matter.

Dr. Rasmus says, “You have to follow the donor agreement to a ‘T,’ or you risk never receiving funds from the donor again, and even worse, you have to give the money back.”

Success Stories: Impacting Lives
Over 30 years, St. John’s Church raised an impressive $200 million. But the true success lies in the small, transformative moments—the minute changes in people’s lives.
Each dollar contributed has made a difference, reinforcing the church’s commitment to its mission.

Success Stories: Transforming Lives
Dr. Rasmus’s fundraising journey spans three decades and has raised. 00 million. However, true success lies not merely in an impressive $2 but in small, profound changes in people’s lives.

Whether providing clean water, clothing, food, or a safe place to sleep, the heart of success is the maximized impact of caring for each individual. When someone feels empowered to take a small step toward recovery, that’s where the magic happens.

This concludes Part 1 of our two-part monthly mailer. In next month’s issue, Dr. Rasmus discusses technology in church growth, offers advice for smaller congregations, shares strategies to prevent donor fatigue, and much more.

As always, I am deeply grateful for your past, present, and future contributions to our community. Your efforts are essential. Let us persist in rising to the challenge!

Warm Regards,
