Tip of the Month: Expressing Gratitude

Maintaining a state of awareness is crucial, particularly when leading a ministry. Cultivating a spirit of gratitude is integral to this awareness. One of the most impactful stewardship practices a church can embrace is expressing genuine gratitude to its financial supporters. Ironically, this practice is often overlooked, yet it serves as a cornerstone for expanding your donor base. By acknowledging your individual congregants’ generosity and support, you not only affirm their contributions but also nurture enduring relationships. These relationships, in turn, foster increased support and serve as invaluable word-of-mouth endorsements to potential new donors. This is how universities and hospitals expand their donors’ giving levels.

Industry best practices advocate for churches to express gratitude to donors at least seven times annually. Here are some effective ways to thank donors:

  1. Make a personal phone call to express heartfelt gratitude for their ongoing support.
  2. Send a handwritten note conveying appreciation for their generosity.
  3. Arrange a casual meeting for coffee or a meal to personally thank the donor.
  4. Extend a personal invitation to a special event hosted by the church.
  5. Distribute a monthly mailer showcasing the church’s achievements, highlighting the vital role of donors like them.
  6. Arrange for beneficiaries of their support to personally express their gratitude through thank-you calls.
  7. Share heartfelt letters from beneficiaries, illustrating the tangible impact of their contributions.

By consistently implementing these practices, you will likely observe an increase in funds and witness a more positive attitude among supporters. Strive for consistency by ensuring at least one expression of gratitude every two months. Your commitment to gratitude will not only enrich your supporters’ experience but also strengthen the foundation of your ministry.
