The 4 Hidden Costs of Relying on Tithes & Offerings

Tithes and offerings have kept us going for generations. But I’ll be straight with you — they’re not enough anymore. Not for what you’re really trying to do.

If your programs are growing, your community’s needs are urgent, and you’re trying to make payroll every month with two loyal donors and a prayer, I already know: something’s not adding up.

This isn’t about your commitment. It’s not even about faith. It’s about structure. Too many churches and community orgs are operating like their funding will magically catch up to their vision.

It won’t.

  1. You’re Saying “No” When Your Heart Says “Yes”

A few years back, I was working with a church in North Carolina. Sharp leadership, strong vision, solid preaching — the kind of place people trust. They had dreams mapped out on a wall: youth mentorship, elder transportation, a GED program. All stuff their community clearly needed.

But when I walked back in six months later, most of it had been quietly taken down.

They told me, “We just couldn’t move on it. Not with what’s coming in.”

They didn’t run out of faith — they ran out of resources. That’s happening everywhere. Ministries with real momentum being forced to pause because the offering plate alone isn’t keeping up.

  1. Your Budget Is Too Fragile

If most of your giving comes from the same five to ten people — one job loss, one family moving, one person pulling back — and you’re down 30% overnight. I’ve seen it more times than I can count.

That’s not bad stewardship. That’s a system that can’t support growth.

  1. You’re Burning Yourself and Your Base Out

Most leaders I work with aren’t just fundraising. They’re pastoring. Counseling. Teaching. Showing up at the hospital, then heading to a board meeting.

When you don’t have a real funding system in place, you end up going back to the same folks again and again. They start to feel it. So do you. And then everybody starts pulling back — not because they don’t care, but because they’re tired.

  1. The Donors Are There — You Just Haven’t Reached Them

There are people near your church or organization right now who believe in what you’re doing. They’ve just never been asked directly, clearly, and with a reason that resonates. Or they were asked once and never followed up with. You can’t grow with that approach.

You need a plan. One that shows people the impact of their giving, helps you build long-term support, and takes some of the pressure off you.
