Who Is the Outside Donor? A Profile of the African American Philanthropist Your Church Has Not Met Yet

There are people in your community right now who have the money and the desire to support what your church is doing.

They are not in your pews on Sunday. They did not grow up in your congregation. They may have never walked through your doors.

But they care deeply about the community your church serves. And if you build the right relationship and make the right ask, they will give.

These are outside donors. And most African American churches have never intentionally pursued them.

Not because these donors do not exist. Because nobody ever built the system to reach them.

This blog profiles six types of outside donors who are already giving to causes in your community. For each one we will tell you exactly who they are, what they care about, what they need to see before they give, and what will make them walk away.

The African American Business Owner

Who they are:

This is someone who built something. A restaurant owner. A real estate investor. A contractor. A financial advisor. An insurance agent. They run their own business and they have disposable income they are looking to put back into the community.

Many of them grew up with very little. They remember what it felt like to need something and not have access to it. That memory does not go away when the money comes.

They are not waiting to be asked by a nonprofit. They are waiting to be asked by someone they trust about something they believe in.

What they care about:

They care about economic opportunity. They want to see the community they came from have more access to the things that helped them build their own success. Job training. Small business support. Youth programs that keep young people on a path forward.

They also care about visibility. They are business people. They understand that investing in the community is also good for their reputation and their relationships. That is not a bad thing. It is honest. And you can work with it.

What they need to see before they give:

They need to see that your church runs its programs like a real operation. Clear outcomes. Organized financials. A specific ask with a specific purpose.

Do not come to this donor with a general need. Come with a specific project. We are running a job training program that serves 40 people per cohort. We need $15,000 to fund the next cohort. That is the kind of ask that lands with a business owner because it sounds like the way they think about their own investments.

What breaks their trust:

Vague asks. No follow-up after they give. Not knowing where their money went. Being contacted only when the church needs something.

If a business owner writes your church a check and never hears from you again until you need another check, they will not write a second one. And they will tell other people.

The Young African American Professional

Who they are:

This person is in their late 20s to early 40s. They have a good job or a growing career. They may be in healthcare, tech, law, education, finance, or government. They grew up in an African American community and they carry that identity with them even as their circumstances have changed.

They are socially conscious. They pay attention to what is happening in the world and in their community. And they feel a quiet pressure to do something with the position they have worked hard to reach.

They are also digital. They follow people and organizations on social media. They research before they give. They talk to their peers about where they put their money.

What they care about:

This donor gives to causes not to institutions. They want to fund something specific that aligns with what they believe in. Education equity. Mental health access. Economic opportunity for Black families. Housing. Youth development.

They do not need your church to be their church. They need your church’s work to match their values. If it does they will give and they will bring their network with them.

What they need to see before they give:

They need to see your work in action before they are ready to invest. They want to see your social media. They want to read your impact report. They want to hear a story about a real person whose life changed because of what your church does.

They also need to see that you are a real organization. A professional website. Clear contact information. Evidence that you take your programs seriously and track what you are doing.

What breaks their trust:

Anything that feels like a Sunday morning offering repackaged as a community investment. They have been around churches their whole life. They know the difference between a church that is serious about community impact and one that is using community language to fill a budget gap.

They also walk away when they feel like the ask is about the church’s needs instead of the community’s needs. Frame everything around the people your programs serve, not around what your organization requires to keep running.

The Retired Educator or Administrator

Who they are:

This person spent 20 to 40 years in service. They were a teacher, a principal, a school administrator, a social worker, a hospital administrator, a government official. They are now retired or close to it. They have time, they have pension income, and they have a lifetime of experience caring about other people.

They are also deeply embedded in the community. They know people. They have relationships that go back decades. Their endorsement of your church’s work is worth more than their check because it opens doors to the people they know.

What they care about:

They care about legacy. At this stage of life they are thinking about what they will leave behind. They want to know that the work they spent their career doing will continue after them.

They are drawn to programs that serve the same people they spent their careers serving. Youth programs. Senior services. Family support. Educational access. If your church runs any of these they are a natural fit.

What they need to see before they give:

They need to see longevity and stability. They have watched organizations come and go. They are not interested in funding a program that will disappear when the pastor moves on or when the budget gets tight.

Show them that your church has been doing this work consistently. Show them the people who have been impacted over time. Give them a timeline of how the program has grown.

They also respond to personal relationship more than any other donor type on this list. They want to have a real conversation with your pastor or your program director before they give. Do not skip that step.

What breaks their trust:

Disorganization. Inconsistency. Turnover. If every time they interact with your church they are talking to a different person, they will not invest.

They also lose trust when they feel rushed. This is not a donor you close on the first conversation. Give them time and treat the relationship like it matters more than the gift.

The Corporate or Civic Professional

Who they are:

This is the African American person who works in a mid to senior level position inside a corporation, a hospital, a university, a bank, or a government agency. They are not business owners but they have influence and they often control or influence their organization’s community investment decisions.

They are the vice president at the bank who can direct corporate giving. The hospital administrator who can point you toward a community health grant. The HR director at a major employer who can set up a workplace giving campaign for your programs.

This donor is valuable not just for what they can give personally but for the doors they can open inside the organizations they work for.

What they care about:

They care about impact that is visible and measurable. They live in a world of metrics and reporting. They want to see that the organizations they support can show results in a way that their employer or their colleagues would find credible.

They also care about alignment. They are looking for community organizations that are doing work their own organization wants to be associated with. Workforce development for an employer. Health programs for a hospital. Education for a university.

What they need to see before they give:

They need a professional presentation. Not a glossy brochure necessarily but a clear and organized explanation of what your program does, how many people it serves, what outcomes it has produced, and what the money will be used for.

They also need to know that your church has a 501c3. They cannot direct corporate giving or foundation grants to an organization that is not properly structured. Get your documentation in order before you approach this donor type.

What breaks their trust:

Lack of documentation. If you cannot produce an annual report, audited financials, or a clear program summary, this donor cannot help you even if they want to. They need paperwork to justify the investment internally.

They also walk away from organizations that cannot articulate outcomes in plain language. Not programs run. Not events held. How many people were served, what changed for them, and how do you know.

The African American Philanthropist

Who they are:

This is someone with significant wealth who has already decided they want to give a meaningful portion of it away. They may have a family foundation. They may be part of a giving circle. They may simply have a personal practice of identifying organizations to support each year.

They are not common but they exist in most African American communities in larger numbers than most church leaders realize. And they are actively looking for organizations worth investing in.

What they care about:

They care about transformational impact. Not incremental. Not maintenance. They want to fund something that changes the trajectory of a community, a program, or a population.

They are also interested in leverage. They want to know that their gift will attract other gifts. That their investment will be the thing that makes something possible that would not have happened otherwise.

What they need to see before they give:

They need to see that your church is ready to use a significant gift well. That you have the organizational infrastructure to manage it. That your leadership is stable and your vision is clear.

They often want to meet your pastor before they consider a major gift. Not a 15-minute meeting. A real conversation over a meal or a tour of your programs.

They also want to be recognized not publicly necessarily but privately. They want to know that the people leading your church understand the significance of what they are considering and take it seriously.

What breaks their trust:

Being approached too soon before the relationship exists. This donor does not respond to cold outreach. They respond to warm introductions from people they already trust.

They also walk away when they sense that an organization is not ready for what they are offering. If your church cannot clearly articulate how a $50,000 gift would be used, a donor capable of giving that amount will move on.

The Community Champion

Who they are:

This person may not be wealthy by any traditional measure. But they are deeply connected. They are the person everyone in the neighborhood knows. The block captain. The longtime community organizer. The person who shows up to every meeting, every event, every conversation about the neighborhood.

They give what they can and it may not be a large check. But their real value is their network. When they believe in your church’s work they tell everyone they know. And the people they know trust their word more than any advertisement or social media post.

What they care about:

They care about authenticity. They can tell immediately whether an organization is truly committed to the community or just present when it is convenient.

They care about consistency. They have watched organizations show up during a crisis and disappear when the cameras left. They are not interested in fair-weather partners.

What they need to see before they give:

They need to see your church in the community outside of Sunday. At the block meeting. At the school board hearing. At the community cleanup. Present and consistent before anyone asks for anything.

They also need to feel that your church sees them. Not as a means to an end but as a valued member of the community whose opinion and relationships matter.

What breaks their trust:

The feeling that your church only shows up when it needs something. This donor has a long memory. If your pastor has never attended a community meeting but suddenly wants their endorsement before a fundraising campaign, they will notice.

They also walk away when they feel like the community is being used to market the church rather than genuinely served by it.

What All Six Have in Common

Every outside donor on this list is looking for the same three things before they give.

Proof that the work is real. They want to see your programs in action. Real people being served. Real outcomes they can point to. Not a vision statement. Evidence.

Trust in your leadership. They need to believe that the person leading your church is competent, honest, and genuinely committed to the community. That trust is built over time through consistent presence and transparent communication. It cannot be manufactured at the moment of the ask.

A specific reason to give now. Every outside donor needs a clear, specific, time-bound ask. Not a general appeal. A specific project with a specific dollar amount and a specific outcome it will produce.

When those three things are in place the conversation shifts. You are no longer asking someone for money. You are inviting them to be part of something real that is already happening. And that invitation lands very differently.

The Gap Is Not the Donors

The outside donors described in this blog exist in your community right now.

They are not waiting to be convinced that the African American community deserves investment. Most of them already believe that. They are waiting to find an organization that has done the work to earn their trust and has built the system to sustain a relationship with them.

That is what a professional fundraising infrastructure does. It builds those relationships consistently. It stewards them all year long. It makes the ask at the right moment in the right way. And it reports back to donors in a way that makes them want to give again.

Your church is already doing the work that outside donors want to fund. The gap is not the mission. The gap is the system.
